This app is designed for people of all ages who feel nonverbal at times. You are not alone.
You can tailor the messages to your own situation, such as:
situational mutism (or selective mutism)
autism and sensory overload
hearing loss
vocal strain or vocal cord injuries
speech impairment, aphasia
or any other condition which impairs speech in a way that temporary non-verbal communication maybe a good idea
Just having the app installed and knowing that it’s there, if needed, feels reassuring. It can even help calm the nervous system in unfamiliar or stressful situations.
How do I use it?
Peace of mind for tricky situations: You can communicate using the apps AAC features in new situations. You can use the Info cards to inform for example a substitute teacher of your situation before a misunderstanding or pressure to communicate verbally takes place.
Maybe you are in a new school building or hospital and are lost or feeling ill. This app helps you in sudden situations to find your way to communicate with others and for others to understand.
The app may help with gaining more independence, as it brings more feeling of safety when walking in new places. Hotels, restaurants, airports, security, hobbies, you name it! It advocates for your wishes. With practice, and from your own needs perspective, it you can even help you communicate your wishes to new doctors, new therapists or have your opinions better heard in meetings with medical experts. This boosts your autonomy and helps you be in charge of your own life. You are the expert of your own needs, and you should be heard in making decisions.
Our Communication Pass may reduce the likelyhood of others misunderstanding your intentions, or thinking of rudeness when there is none. It may help others be more kind and accepting to your situation, as they are more aware and less prone to judging.
We aim to understand and want to help. This Communication Passport has deep personal meaning to us and is designed with the best intentions by a clinical psychologist with multitude of AAC training, understanding of situational mutism, autism, and understanding of speech and language pathology. We have got your back. Let us know how to improve our app further.
Parents, doctors and therapists are also welcome to try the app. It has been well received in the medical community and received praise for its innovation.
